Draw Odds With a Home or Away Favourite: Same Price, Same Draw Rate?
The draw price looks the same whichever end the favourite plays at. Across 75,471 matches, the outcomes and returns behind that price were not quite the same.
A draw at a given price is usually treated as the same bet wherever the favourite happens to be playing. When I'm weighing a level game for my 1X2 bet tips page, though, I've always had a nagging sense that a home favourite failing to break a side down is a different event from a strong club travelling and getting stuck. So I tested it across 22 European divisions.
The headline answer is that the gap is small but consistent. Of 75,046 matches with a clear favourite, home-favourite games drew 26.3% of the time and away-favourite games 25.9%. Backing every draw returned โ5.3% with a home favourite and โ8.2% with an away favourite at a major bookmaker. Neither draw is a money-maker on its own, but one is clearly the less bad of the two.
Test 1Home-favourite games draw slightly more at the same price
This chart lines up the draw rate for both venues inside the same draw-price band, so the price itself is held roughly constant. In the shortest band, under 3.20, home-favourite games drew 33.3% against 32.2% for away-favourite games. At 3.20โ3.39 it was 28.9% against 27.5%, and the home-favourite dot sits to the right again through the next two bands.
The pattern fades as the draw gets longer. At 3.90โ4.49 the away-favourite games actually drew a touch more, 22.5% against 22.1%, and at 4.50 or more the two meet at 15.5%. So the home edge belongs to the tighter, more evenly priced matches, not the mismatches.
View the data: draw rate at the same draw price
| Home favourite | Away favourite | |
|---|---|---|
| Under 3.20 (8,331 home fav / 3,434 away fav) | 33.3% | 32.2% |
| 3.20โ3.39 (11,753 home fav / 5,424 away fav) | 28.9% | 27.5% |
| 3.40โ3.59 (10,641 home fav / 5,226 away fav) | 27.6% | 26.9% |
| 3.60โ3.89 (9,135 home fav / 4,088 away fav) | 25.7% | 24.6% |
| 3.90โ4.49 (5,948 home fav / 2,425 away fav) | 22.1% | 22.5% |
| 4.50 or more (6,578 home fav / 2,063 away fav) | 15.5% | 15.5% |
The honest caveat: each of these gaps is small enough to sit close to the sampling noise, and the away-favourite pool is much smaller and dominated by strong clubs visiting weaker ones. I'm only leaning on the fact that the same direction repeats band after band, not on any single row.
Test 2The market prices both draws alike but only one beats it
Here the actual draw rate sits next to the margin-free rate the price implied. The striking thing is the priced columns: in most bands they are identical for both venues, 30.9% and 30.9% under 3.20, 28.6% and 28.6% at 3.20โ3.39. The market is not distinguishing between a home and an away favourite when it sets the draw.
The results do distinguish. Home-favourite games landed above the priced rate in each of the first four bands, most clearly under 3.20 at 33.3% against 30.9%. Away-favourite games fell short of their price from 3.20โ3.39 onwards, and at 4.50 or more they were priced at 17.9% yet drew only 15.5%.
| Draw odds | Home-fav games | Draws | Away-fav games | Draws | Priced (home fav) | Priced (away fav) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 3.20 | 8,331 | 33.3% | 3,434 | 32.2% | 30.9% | 30.9% |
| 3.20โ3.39 | 11,753 | 28.9% | 5,424 | 27.5% | 28.6% | 28.6% |
| 3.40โ3.59 | 10,641 | 27.6% | 5,226 | 26.9% | 27.2% | 27.2% |
| 3.60โ3.89 | 9,135 | 25.7% | 4,088 | 24.6% | 25.5% | 25.5% |
| 3.90โ4.49 | 5,948 | 22.1% | 2,425 | 22.5% | 22.9% | 23.0% |
| 4.50 or more | 6,578 | 15.5% | 2,063 | 15.5% | 16.7% | 17.9% |
Test 3The away-favourite draw loses more in nearly every band
Turn those rates into flat-stake returns at a major bookmaker and the bars tell a plain story. The home-favourite draw lost less in every band except 3.90โ4.49, where it was โ9.1% against โ7.4%. The worst corner is a long draw with an away favourite, at โ18.1% for 4.50 or more.
The one positive bar is home-favourite games under 3.20, at +1.2%, while the away-favourite equivalent returned โ2.2%. Taking the best available price instead narrows the overall picture to โ0.4% and โ3.6%, which tells me shopping around matters more here than any venue filter.
View the data: backing the draw: home-favourite vs away-favourite games
| Home favourite | Away favourite | |
|---|---|---|
| Under 3.20 | +1.2% | โ2.2% |
| 3.20โ3.39 | โ5.2% | โ9.6% |
| 3.40โ3.59 | โ4.3% | โ6.6% |
| 3.60โ3.89 | โ4.9% | โ9.1% |
| 3.90โ4.49 | โ9.1% | โ7.4% |
| 4.50 or more | โ12.7% | โ18.1% |
| All draw prices | โ5.3% | โ8.2% |
I would not treat that +1.2% as a reliable edge. It's a thin margin from a single band, and it's the sort of number that disappears with a slightly worse price or a quieter sample.
Test 4Away favourites concede more upsets while the draw holds steady
The last chart splits full 1X2 outcomes by tier. In top flights the draw share barely moves with venue, 24.9% for home favourites and 24.8% for away favourites. What changes is the upset: underdogs win 19.9% against a home favourite but 22.5% when they're at home against the favourite.
Lower divisions draw more overall, 27.4% and 27.0%, and the venue effect on the upset is sharper. Away favourites win 44.4% there, against 48.3% for home favourites, with underdogs taking 28.6% of those matches.
View the data: 1x2 result by favourite venue and tier
| Favourite wins | Draw | Underdog wins | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top flights, home favourite | 55.2% | 24.9% | 19.9% |
| Top flights, away favourite | 52.7% | 24.8% | 22.5% |
| Lower divisions, home favourite | 48.3% | 27.4% | 24.3% |
| Lower divisions, away favourite | 44.4% | 27.0% | 28.6% |
For me that reframes the question. Venue mostly shifts results between the favourite and the underdog, and the draw is the quieter passenger. If I want to bet against an away favourite, the home underdog looks a more natural place to look than the draw.
Lab verdict
| Short draws, home favourite | Under 3.20 with a home favourite was the only band that landed above its price, drawing 33.3% against 30.9% priced. Treat it as a filter worth watching rather than a standing bet, since the +1.2% return is thin. |
|---|---|
| Avoid long away-favourite draws | At 4.50 or more with an away favourite, the draw was priced at 17.9% but landed 15.5%, returning โ18.1%. That is the clearest spot to leave the draw alone. |
| Price beats venue | Across all games the draw returned โ5.3% and โ8.2% at a major bookmaker but โ0.4% and โ3.6% at the best price. Getting the best odds does more for the draw bet than choosing the favourite's venue. |
Questions bettors ask
Do matches with a home favourite draw more often than matches with an away favourite?
Slightly. Home-favourite games drew 26.3% of the time and away-favourite games 25.9%, with the gap showing mainly in the shorter draw-price bands.
Is backing the draw profitable when the favourite is playing away?
Not in this sample. Backing every draw in away-favourite games returned โ8.2% at a major bookmaker and โ3.6% even at the best available price.
Are draws more common in lower divisions?
Yes. Lower-division games drew 27.4% with a home favourite and 27.0% with an away favourite, against 24.9% and 24.8% in top flights.
