Are Away Favourite Games Higher Scoring? Goals by Favourite Venue
At the same favourite price, games with an away favourite score slightly more. The gap is small, sits mostly in the middle of the market and changes how I picture a scoreline.
Correct Score & Over/Under 2.5 specialistReviewed by Oliver Hartley, Editor-in-Chief6 min read
When the away side is favourite, I've always pictured a more open match. The visitors have to come and play, and the home crowd won't let their side sit back. I wanted to know whether that picture holds up once price is taken out of it. Away favourites usually sit at longer prices than home favourites, so a straight comparison would mislead. This study lines them up band by band across 113,838 matches in 38 leagues.
The headline is yes, slightly, and mostly in the middle of the market. At 1.80–2.19, away-favourite games averaged 2.66 goals against 2.57 with a home favourite, and Over 2.5 landed 50.3% of the time versus 47.5%. It is a nudge rather than a shove, but it is a nudge I now build into the scorelines I pick for today's correct score tips.
Test 1Away favourites produce more goals in most mid-range price bands
The dumbbell chart puts the two venues side by side inside each favourite-price band. Away-favourite games had more goals per match in 4 of the 6 bands. At 1.50–1.79 the gap is barely there, 2.76 against 2.78. It opens up at 1.80–2.19 and holds at 2.20–2.59, where home favourites averaged 2.50 and away favourites 2.58.
At the very short end the pattern flattens or tips the other way. When a side is a heavy favourite, venue matters less than the gulf in quality, and the goals come regardless of where the match is played.
View the data: goals per match: home favourite vs away favourite
| Favourite at home | Favourite away | |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1.30 (4,195 home / 857 away) | 3.41 | 3.35 |
| 1.30–1.49 (7,470 home / 2,140 away) | 3 | 2.99 |
| 1.50–1.79 (17,525 home / 5,147 away) | 2.76 | 2.78 |
| 1.80–2.19 (26,528 home / 10,272 away) | 2.57 | 2.66 |
| 2.20–2.59 (21,107 home / 13,322 away) | 2.5 | 2.58 |
| 2.60+ (2,838 home / 2,437 away) | 2.3 | 2.31 |
What I take from this is that the venue effect lives where the match is genuinely contested. Once the favourite is priced around evens or a bit shorter, an away favourite seems to drag the game into a more open shape than a home favourite at the same price.
Test 2Over 2.5 lands more often with an away favourite at 1.80–2.19
This is the table that matters for my Over/Under work. At 1.80–2.19, Over 2.5 landed 47.5% (±0.6) with a home favourite and 50.3% (±1.0) with an away favourite. Those ranges sit clear of each other, which is about as solid as a venue split gets with these sample sizes. At 2.20–2.59 the same story repeats: 45.9% against 47.8%.
The short-priced rows tell a different tale. Under 1.30, Over 2.5 landed 67.4% with home favourites and 66.3% with away favourites, but the away row rests on only 857 matches and carries a range of ±3.2. I would not read anything into that difference.
| Favourite price | Home fav matches | Over 2.5 | 95% range | Away fav matches | Over 2.5 | 95% range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1.30 | 4,195 | 67.4% | ±1.4 | 857 | 66.3% | ±3.2 |
| 1.30–1.49 | 7,470 | 58.4% | ±1.1 | 2,140 | 58.1% | ±2.1 |
| 1.50–1.79 | 17,525 | 52.5% | ±0.7 | 5,147 | 53.5% | ±1.4 |
| 1.80–2.19 | 26,528 | 47.5% | ±0.6 | 10,272 | 50.3% | ±1.0 |
| 2.20–2.59 | 21,107 | 45.9% | ±0.7 | 13,322 | 47.8% | ±0.8 |
| 2.60+ | 2,838 | 39.8% | ±1.8 | 2,437 | 41.6% | ±2.0 |
The main caveat is the league mix. Some divisions throw up away favourites far more often than others, and if those leagues happen to be higher scoring, part of this gap belongs to the competition rather than the venue. Treat the split as a lean to check against the league you are betting, not a rule to apply blind.
Test 3The extra goals come from fewer quiet games and more 4+ matches
The stacked bars split each band into 0-1, 2-3 and 4+ goals. At 1.80–2.19, 4+ goals came in 26.2% of home-favourite games and 27.9% of away-favourite games. At the other end, 0-1 goals came in 27.3% and 25.9%. The whole distribution shifts slightly upward rather than one tail stretching out.
The middle barely moves. At 2.20–2.59, the 2-3 goals range landed 47.5% with a home favourite and 46.5% with an away favourite, close enough that I treat it as unchanged.
View the data: goal ranges by favourite venue
| 0-1 goals | 2-3 goals | 4+ goals | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home fav 1.50–1.79 | 23.5% | 47.1% | 29.4% |
| Away fav 1.50–1.79 | 23.4% | 46.1% | 30.5% |
| Home fav 1.80–2.19 | 27.3% | 46.4% | 26.2% |
| Away fav 1.80–2.19 | 25.9% | 46.2% | 27.9% |
| Home fav 2.20–2.59 | 28.3% | 47.5% | 24.2% |
| Away fav 2.20–2.59 | 27.4% | 46.5% | 26.1% |
For Correct Score this is useful. With an away favourite in that middle band, I lean away from 1-0 and 0-0 shapes and give a bit more weight to 2-2, 3-1 and similar scorelines than I would for the same price at home.
Test 4Both sides score a touch more when the favourite travels
The heatmap splits the goals between favourite and underdog. At 1.80–2.19, the favourite scored 1.53 goals per match at home and 1.58 away. The underdog scored 1.04 when on the road and 1.08 when at home against an away favourite. Both columns rise, which fits the picture of a more open game.
Further up the market it is closer. At 1.50–1.79, the home underdog scored 0.95 against an away favourite, compared with 0.94 for an away underdog against a home favourite, which is essentially level.
View the data: who scores: favourite and underdog goals by venue
| Fav goals (fav home) | Fav goals (fav away) | Dog goals (fav home) | Dog goals (fav away) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1.30 | 2.74 | 2.65 | 0.67 | 0.69 |
| 1.30–1.49 | 2.2 | 2.17 | 0.81 | 0.83 |
| 1.50–1.79 | 1.82 | 1.84 | 0.94 | 0.95 |
| 1.80–2.19 | 1.53 | 1.58 | 1.04 | 1.08 |
| 2.20–2.59 | 1.33 | 1.37 | 1.16 | 1.2 |
| 2.60+ | 1.15 | 1.19 | 1.15 | 1.13 |
So the extra goals are not just the home side chasing. In the mid-price band, the away favourite seems to score a little more too, which suggests both teams leave more space than they would with the roles reversed.
Lab verdict
| Mid-price away favourites | The venue edge is clearest at 1.80–2.19, where Over 2.5 landed 50.3% with an away favourite against 47.5% with a home favourite. That is the band where I let venue shift my goals line. |
|---|---|
| Ignore venue when short | Under 1.30, Over 2.5 landed 67.4% with home favourites and 66.3% with away favourites, and the away sample is small. At that price, team quality drives the goals, not the venue. |
| Check the league first | League mix can tilt this comparison, so compare the Over 2.5 price with the league's own record before leaning on venue. The gap is a few points, which a poor price can wipe out entirely. |
