Team to Score in Both Halves: How Often Each Side Manages It
Scoring in both halves sounds like a strong-side bet, but it is a narrower target than two goals. Here is how often each price band actually manages it.

Team to score in both halves is a market I watch closely because it rewards a particular kind of side: one that starts on the front foot and keeps pushing after the break. If you already read my double result predictions, you'll know I care about how a match unfolds over ninety minutes, not just the final score. So I wanted to know how often sides pull it off, and how it stacks up against simply backing them to score twice.
Across 150,946 team-matches from 22 divisions and 75,530 matches, a side scored in both halves 23.7% of the time, which works out at fair odds of 4.22. That is a much narrower bet than team over 1.5, which landed in 38.0% of team-matches. The win price does most of the sorting, and the venue matters far less than I expected.
Test 1Second-half-only goals beat first-half-only in every price band
This chart splits every side's match into four outcomes: no goals, first half only, second half only, or both halves. The strongest favourites, priced under 1.40, scored in both halves 52.7% of the time, and when they only managed one half it was the second half far more often, 24.4% against 16.5%. Overall, sides scored after the break in 51.9% of team-matches against 44.2% before it.
That second-half lean holds in every price band, not only among favourites. At 2.00โ2.49 the split was 23.4% neither half, 21.3% first half only, 29.1% second half only and 26.2% both halves. Push out to 3.00โ3.99 and a third of those sides, 33.1%, failed to score at all, while only 17.6% hit both halves.

| Neither half | 1st half only | 2nd half only | Both halves | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1.40 | 6.4% | 16.5% | 24.4% | 52.7% |
| 1.40โ1.69 | 12.9% | 19.4% | 28.2% | 39.6% |
| 1.70โ1.99 | 18.1% | 20.9% | 29.4% | 31.6% |
| 2.00โ2.49 | 23.4% | 21.3% | 29.1% | 26.2% |
| 2.50โ2.99 | 28.0% | 21.9% | 29.3% | 20.8% |
| 3.00โ3.99 | 33.1% | 20.6% | 28.7% | 17.6% |
| 4.00โ5.99 | 38.3% | 19.8% | 27.3% | 14.6% |
| 6.00+ | 46.6% | 18.8% | 24.4% | 10.1% |
The caveat I'd keep in mind is that second-half goals here include stoppage time, which tends to run longer than in the first half. Some of that late-goal advantage is simply extra minutes. For a bettor, the practical point is that the first half is usually the leg that fails, so a side that starts slowly is a poor fit for this market however good it looks over a full match.
Test 2Team over 1.5 lands far more often at every price
Every side that scores in both halves has scored at least twice, so this bet is always a slice of team over 1.5, never a separate route to it. The dumbbell shows how big the slice is. Sides priced under 1.40 went over 1.5 in 73.3% of 6,451 team-matches, but scored in both halves in only 52.7%.
The gap persists right down the price ladder. Sides priced 6.00+ scored in both halves just 10.1% of the time from 11,767 team-matches, fair odds 9.89. A two-goal haul that arrives in a single spell, a quick double before half-time or a late burst, pays out on over 1.5 and loses on both halves.
View the data: scoring in both halves vs scoring 2+
| Team over 1.5 | Scored in both halves | |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1.40 (6,451 team-matches) | 73.3% | 52.7% |
| 1.40โ1.69 (12,093 team-matches) | 59.0% | 39.6% |
| 1.70โ1.99 (16,602 team-matches) | 49.6% | 31.6% |
| 2.00โ2.49 (31,338 team-matches) | 41.9% | 26.2% |
| 2.50โ2.99 (23,908 team-matches) | 35.0% | 20.8% |
| 3.00โ3.99 (29,375 team-matches) | 29.8% | 17.6% |
| 4.00โ5.99 (19,412 team-matches) | 25.1% | 14.6% |
| 6.00+ (11,767 team-matches) | 18.2% | 10.1% |
That shapes how I'd judge a price. Both halves must pay noticeably more than team over 1.5 on the same side, because you are giving up every match where the goals cluster. If the gap in price looks thin, the simpler bet is usually the better one.
Test 3Home and away sides score in both halves at similar rates
I expected home sides to dominate here, but once you control for win price the venue barely moves the rate. At 1.40โ1.69, home sides scored in both halves 39.2% of the time (fair 2.55) and away sides 40.9% (fair 2.44). At 2.00โ2.49 it was 25.8% for home sides against 26.9% away.
Where differences show, they are small and run both ways. Under 1.40, home sides hit 53.3% against 50.5% for away sides, though the away sample is only 1,377 team-matches. At 4.00โ5.99, home sides managed 16.0% to 14.2% away.
| Own win price | Home n | Home rate | Home fair | Away n | Away rate | Away fair |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1.40 | 5,074 | 53.3% | 1.88 | 1,377 | 50.5% | 1.98 |
| 1.40โ1.69 | 9,157 | 39.2% | 2.55 | 2,936 | 40.9% | 2.44 |
| 1.70โ1.99 | 12,367 | 31.3% | 3.20 | 4,235 | 32.7% | 3.06 |
| 2.00โ2.49 | 20,989 | 25.8% | 3.88 | 10,349 | 26.9% | 3.71 |
| 2.50โ2.99 | 11,617 | 20.7% | 4.82 | 12,291 | 20.9% | 4.78 |
| 3.00โ3.99 | 9,226 | 18.0% | 5.55 | 20,149 | 17.4% | 5.75 |
| 4.00โ5.99 | 4,445 | 16.0% | 6.25 | 14,967 | 14.2% | 7.03 |
| 6.00+ | 2,596 | 10.5% | 9.51 | 9,171 | 10.0% | 10.00 |
My reading is that the win price already carries the home advantage. Once a bookmaker has priced a side, knowing it plays at home adds very little to its chances of scoring in both halves.
Lab verdict
| Short favourites only | Sides under 1.40 scored in both halves 52.7% of the time, fair odds 4.22 across all sides drops to 1.88 for home favourites. Outside the shortest bands the hit rate falls quickly, to 17.6% at 3.00โ3.99. |
|---|---|
| Compare with over 1.5 | Team over 1.5 landed in 38.0% of team-matches against 23.7% for both halves, so the both-halves price needs to be clearly bigger to justify the narrower target. These fair odds are models built from hit rates, not prices you can actually bet. |
| Price beats venue | Home and away rates sit close together in every band, such as 39.2% against 40.9% at 1.40โ1.69. Check the side's price and its league's scoring level before thinking about where it plays. |
Questions bettors ask
How often does a team score in both halves?
Across 150,946 team-matches, a side scored in both halves 23.7% of the time. That equates to fair odds of 4.22 before any bookmaker margin.
Is team to score in both halves better than team over 1.5 goals?
It is a narrower bet, since every both-halves winner has also gone over 1.5. Sides scored two or more in 38.0% of team-matches against 23.7% for both halves, so it needs a clearly bigger price to be worth taking.
Do home teams score in both halves more often than away teams?
Only slightly, and not at every price. Home sides priced under 1.40 managed 53.3% against 50.5% away, but at 1.40โ1.69 away sides were ahead, 40.9% to 39.2%.
